TOP CAMPAIGN AWARD: The International Palm Oil Campaign

The International Palm Oil Campaign, led by Greenpeace, Rainforest Action Network, and Catapult with the support of Green Century Funds, SumOfUs, Green Corps, Union of Concerned Scientists,  and the UN Secretary General’s Climate Summit 2014 – Parties to the New York Declaration on Forests Action Statement and Action Plans, is awarded a 2014 BENNY. This campaign successfully pushed major palm oil consumer companies like Kellogg, Nestle, Unilever, Mondelez, Colgate, Procter & Gamble, Johnson & Johnson and others to adopt no deforestation policies, forcing suppliers like Wilmar, GAR and Cargill to do the same. This classic markets strategy represents the convergence of three campaigns:

Greenpeace and RAN have been linking deforestation and social abuses caused by palm oil to American corporations for almost a decade. We are proud to receive this award and to be part of a coalition of NGOs that drove many consumer companies and its suppliers to adopt responsible sourcing practices. We would like to thank our supporters, who allow Greenpeace to remain independent, the hundreds of thousands of people from around the world who took action to demand deforestation free palm oil and our staff, especially in South East Asia, whose dedication to the worlds climate and forests is an inspiration to all of us.

Rainforest Action Network Accepts Award:

The inspiring breakthroughs recently achieved among palm oil’s biggest players – from Cargill to Snack Food 20 companies – are a testament to the unrelenting work of local communities supported by thousands of people and many international organizations over many years. These successes, almost unimaginable just a few years ago, provide a great example of how our movement can successfully take on seemingly insurmountable odds when our organizations strategically coordinate our efforts to become more impactful than the sum of our parts alone. This recognition will help carry the momentum forward as the hard work begins to turn these corporate promises into the transformative change still needed on the ground.

Catapult Accepts Award:

We accept this award on behalf of all the Forest Heroes out there: the hundreds of organizations and millions of visionary people around the world who took action to protect the world’s rainforests and spur a revolution in global agriculture. This award helps send a powerful signal that there is tremendous energy and momentum to save the world’s forests.
